  2. 31 October 1883
First witness for the plaintiff when the trial began on 31 Oct 1883 before Judge Shipman in the US Circuit Court; testified to the meeting at Prime's house. The report says the object of his evidence was to establish that Cesnola read the paper to the gentlemen and gave out printed slips for publication; the Dec. 1883 supplement says one of Feuardent's five $5,000 claims was thrown out because Cesnola's report to the Board was a privileged communication and 'it is not shown that the defendant caused its publication in the newspapers'.
