Restorer / conservator
Kathleen Kimber
fl. 1974–1985
Conservator, active 1974–1985. Worked with Desmond Morris.
Life and work
- c. 1974–1985Cleaned, repaired and conserved the Cypriot objects of Desmond Morris's collection over 'a period of more than ten years' (several hundred vessels and figures), including those photographed in his 1985 book. Morris names the problems she met: encrustation, surface wear, ancient and modern breakage, amateur restorations (pseudo-encrustation over fractures, 'hybrid' vessels assembled from parts of different originals, which she dismantled), and missing parts. Her rule was not to restore guesswork; modern parts were added only twice (a handle on the nine-bowl vessel, Pl. 163, and the head of the figure on the 'Deer-milking jug').
