    At the 8th International Congress of Classical Archaeology in Paris, V. Karageorghis (then acting Director of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus), presenting the first results of his excavations in the Royal Necropolis of Salamis, was introduced to leading French scholars including Jean Charbonneaux and Pierre Devambez of the Louvre, and spoke with them about Cyprus. Devambez then suggested to J. Pouilloux that he excavate at Salamis, which led to the French mission.
