János György Szilágyi
1918–2016 · Hungary
Budapest curator of Greek and Roman antiquities who edited the series carrying the Hungarian catalogue of Cypriote antiquities and gave its author his notes on the collection.
Biography
When Boldizsár Csornay-Caprez published the Hungarian collections of Cypriote antiquities in 2000, the volume appeared in a series that János György Szilágyi edited1. Csornay-Caprez thanks him as former Head of the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, for reading the manuscript in July 1996 and for access to his notes on the Cypriote material, which he had collected over four decades1.
According to the Hungarian Wikipedia, Szilágyi was born in Budapest on 16 July 1918 and died there on 7 January 2016. It gives his years at the head of the museum's Antique Collection as 1951 to 1992, followed by a post as chief curator2. His own work was mainly on Etruscan and Greek art. Csornay-Caprez cites him in the catalogue entries for Cypriote pieces, among them a 1957 guide to the Greek and Roman collection written with L. Castiglione, and a 1974 guide to the museum's antiquities written with M. Szabó1.
For the provenance of the Zichy Collection, Csornay-Caprez cites Szilágyi in L. Barkóczi's Antike Gläser (1996), page 8, for the account that Count Ferenc Zichy collected in Cyprus on a visit with Austen Henry Layard1. Csornay-Caprez calls this the family's undocumented recollection1.
