Restorer / conservator
J. Claire Dean
fl. 1988–1989
Field coordinator of the 1988-89 Getty Conservation Institute and Department of Antiquities project to lift, re-lay and conserve the Orpheus mosaic at Nea Paphos.
Biography
J. Claire Dean was the field coordinator for the project that lifted, re-laid and conserved the Orpheus mosaic at Nea Paphos in 1988 and 1989. The Getty Conservation Institute volume on the project lists her as "Field Coordinator for the Project, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks"1. A note beside that list gives her as "J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu"; the volume states that the titles in its list are those held in June 1988, so the date of that post is not clear1.
The project ran under the Department of Antiquities, with Demetrios Michaelides as district officer and excavator of the mosaic1. In the project history, Nicholas Stanley Price writes that she coordinated local arrangements for Phase 1, in autumn 1988, when the mosaic was documented and lifted, and for Phase 2, from 28 May to 23 June 1989, when it was reinstalled under the direction of Jan Kosinka1. The acknowledgements thank her as field coordinator throughout the two campaigns, who completed conservation and documentation work on the mosaic after its reinstallation1.
On 16-22 August 1989 she finished the infilling of lacunae and carried out the limited local consolidation that had been decided on. Guillermo Aldana then photographed the conserved mosaic from 17 to 20 October 1989, with her assistance1. A footnote credits her with the account of how the border fragments were reintegrated, and a figure caption shows her on the scaffolding that she, Aldana and Department of Antiquities staff designed for the overhead photographs1. No other work of hers in Cyprus is recorded.
