- 1855Medical officer in the Crimean War; humanitarian service during the siege of Kars, honoured by England, France and Russia, making the Sandwith name well known
- 1870Kept "reserved and rare specimens" of his brother T. B. Sandwith's Cypriot antiquities at the Old Manor House, Wimbledon; John Holmes of Leeds called on him there after the August 1870 Leeds exhibition of the collection
