Life and work

Deciphered the hieroglyphic inscription on a white-paste Egyptian scarab from a Cypro-Archaic tomb found accidentally in Kimon Street, Limassol, during house foundations in 1959 (finds registered nos. 247-248). Translation as printed: 'Amon-Re loves whomever loves him'; formula 'appears only from the 22nd dynasty', hence not before 900 BC, devotion to Amon ceasing with the Persian dynasty c. 525 BC. The note reached Karageorghis through Robert Charles.
