Life and work
- 1936As Director of the British School at Rome (temporarily closed through anti-British feeling by the Italian fascist authorities), arrived in Cyprus with the School's Librarian Ellis Waterhouse to identify a possible site for a School excavation, in the weeks between John Hilton's departure (6 April) and Megaw's arrival (July). No excavation is recorded.

- 1936Wrote afterwards to the Colonial Office that he had no doubt Rupert Gunnis was responsible for David Talbot Rice's criticism of the Department of Antiquities, calling Gunnis 'a clever and irresponsible and mischievous intriguer, who loves his influence'; Stanley-Price calls Hardie and Waterhouse an independent view, caught up in the prevailing intrigues.
