Students and early-career researchers from Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt and Syria can apply to the London-based Honor Frost Foundation for money to train in maritime archaeology. The training grants have no closing date: the foundation decides applications every month, on the 10th, and pays successful applicants by the last day of that month. It asks applicants to apply at least four months before the course or event, to leave time for the decision and for any visa.
There are three streams. Career Development Grants, worth up to £2,000, pay for an individual to attend or organise a conference, workshop or training event on the region's maritime archaeology. Each person can receive only one such grant for a conference in an academic year; the foundation's own meetings, Under the Mediterranean and the Maritime Archaeology Graduate Symposium, are exempt from that limit. Training and Capacity Development Grants, worth up to £10,000, cover one-off short training in skills the region needs, conservation or geomorphology for example, or let a person or institution train others. Postgraduates may use them for specialist courses or placements, but the foundation will pay neither fees nor living allowances. Targeted Grants are offered from time to time for events the foundation names, such as IKUWA, MAGS, ISBSA and the EAA meeting.
Each scheme's page links to the foundation's online application form. Applicants of other nationalities who work in these four countries or elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean are asked to contact Dani Newman at the foundation before applying.
The foundation, which bears the name of Honor Frost, also funds research projects through Small, Medium and Large grants, each on its own annual timetable of deadlines. The archaeology of Cypriot boats and harbours is covered in Seafaring and ships.
