Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany · founded 1975
Freiburg dealer in Egyptian, Greek and Roman art, opened by Günter Puhze in 1975, publisher of the annual catalogue Kunst der Antike, with occasional Cypriot pieces sold to a Hanau museum.
About
Galerie Günter Puhze in Freiburg im Breisgau publishes an annual catalogue, Kunst der Antike, and according to the gallery it opened in 1975 under Günter Puhze6. The gallery's own history says Puhze studied antiquity from the early 1960s and worked in galleries in Zurich and Freiburg before opening his own12. It specialises in Egyptian, Greek and Roman art, and Puhze is a founding member of the International Association of Dealers in Ancient Art, and the gallery also lists the Deutscher Kunsthandelsverband and CINOA6. Micaela Puhze is also listed as an IADAA member7.
Library records list Kunst der Antike with issues for 2004 to 2009 and date the series to 197910. The gallery says it takes part in major international fairs; it exhibited at BRAFA in 2026, and its fairs page lists Antike in Basel & Tribal Art, held during Art Basel, in June 20276,7,13. The J. Paul Getty Museum bought an ancient lamp in 19839.
Between 1986 and 1995 the Hessisches Puppenmuseum in Hanau acquired Cypriot antiquities from "G. Puhze, KH Freiburg": one stone sculpture, five Late Cypriot and Cypro-Archaic ceramics and five terracottas1. A stock page updated on 5 June 2008 offered a limestone votive head of a youth, 3rd century BC, 17.8 cm high, described as "Ex Cesnola collection" and citing the 1904 Cesnola stone sculpture catalogue, no. 1089, price on request11. On 17 April 2015 a White Painted bowl with tubular spout, dated 1900 to 1600 BC, was acquired at the gallery8.
The Cypriot collection
Cypriot material is a minor strand of a gallery specialising in Egyptian, Greek and Roman art. The current website has no Cypriot category and its search for Zypern returns nothing. An archived 2008 stock page offers a Cypriote limestone votive head 'ex Cesnola collection'; a Cypriot White Painted bowl passed through the gallery in 2015; and a German museum bought eleven Cypriot pieces from it in 1986-1995. Quantity of Cypriot stock in the annual catalogues not established. (2026)
