Lake Hopatcong, United States · founded 1984

Online dealer in antiquities, ancient coins and world art in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, established in 1984 by Edgar L. Owen, with a small Cypriot section and a Cesnola-provenance amphora.

About

An online dealer in antiquities, ancient coins and world art, run by Edgar L. Owen from Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey. The firm says it was established in 1984 and calls itself a premier gallery with over 12,500 customers, museums and university collections among them, and every piece vetted by at least two experts1. It keeps no physical gallery and issues no printed catalogues, which it gives as the way it holds overhead down1.

Stock is arranged by culture and type. The Near Eastern page has a Cypriot menu entry and an Ancient Cypriot Art heading2. The one piece shown, reference 8675, is a very large bichrome amphora (the listing is also titled a pithos) of the Cypro-Archaic period, 750-600 BC, intact, 20 by 26 inches. The firm prints a provenance for it: acquired in Cyprus in 1865-1873 by Luigi Palma di Cesnola, "possibly" the Metropolitan Museum of Art, then sold at auction by Harmer Rooke Galleries in 1996. The listing is marked sold2,3. A separate collection page lists "various Cypriot types" among large amphorae, Roman red ware and bronze vessels4.

The firm also held an online auction, Antiquities and World and Fine Art, on 10 September 2014, with 93 lots5.

The Cypriot collection

Cypriot material is a minor part of the stock: the Near Eastern page has an Ancient Cypriot Art heading whose only item, a Cesnola-provenance bichrome amphora, is marked sold; a collection offered on the site includes 'various Cypriot types'. (2026)
