Christoph Bacher Archäologie Ancient Art
Vienna, Austria · founded 2015
Vienna gallery of ancient art from 6000 BC to AD 600, founded in 2015 by the journalist Christoph Bacher, with Cypriot pottery and terracottas among its stock.
About
A journalist from the editorial board of the Austrian magazine NEWS founded this Vienna gallery in 2015. Christoph Bacher studied history in Vienna and worked almost twenty years in journalism1. According to the gallery's own history page, he left in February 2015, opened a showroom that year and added a second, of 170 square metres, in April 2017; the page names Rosalynn Phoa-Bacher as co-founder4. The gallery deals in ancient art dated from 6000 BC to AD 600, and it is listed as a member of IADAA, of CINOA and of the Austrian Wirtschaftskammer1,5.
It sorts its stock into Egypt, Greece, the Ancient Near East, Europe, the Roman Empire, Italy and Etruria, ancient glass and Pre-Columbian art. Cyprus has no category of its own, but a search of the gallery's site for "Cypriot" returns at least ten listings: White Painted oinochoe, jug and askos forms, a Black Polished flask, a Bichrome oinochoe, a Red Polished bowl, a large hydria and Archaic terracottas including a chariot group, a goddess bust and a tambourine player2.
The listings print provenances. A Red Polished bowl dated 2500 to 2000 BCE came from Charles Ede Ltd in London before 1989, then passed to the Teichner collection in Connecticut and through a New York auction in 20153. A beak-spouted jug carries the history of the Rudeck collection, bought from the Vienna dealer Gerhard Herinek in 1991, and a White Painted oinochoe dated 750 to 600 BCE is listed with the Cran collection and a Bonhams sale of 20122. The large hydria comes from the collection of Jean Pouilloux, and the goddess bust is recorded as passing through Chicago in 19862,6. A terracotta chariot offered at EUR 6,800 has a 2010 Christie's London lot in its history. A Bichrome oinochoe offered at EUR 6,000 is said to have come from a New York collection in the 1960s, with a Cypriot lead export seal2.
The Cypriot collection
Cypriot pottery and Archaic terracottas offered in the online shop (no separate Cyprus category; listed under Greece/Cyprus and in a site search for Cypriot, which returns at least ten items): White Painted, Red Polished, Black Polished, Bichrome, a large hydria, a terracotta chariot, a goddess bust and a Kamelarga-style tambourine player. Six of the ten were marked sold when read; printed provenances name private collections and earlier sales. (2026)
