The project
The Department of Antiquities excavated two tombs at Polemidhia, eight years apart. In 1952 it excavated a Roman-period tomb that had been discovered accidentally; the annual report mentions glass, lamps and coins, and associates coins of Augustus? and Trajan with Polemidhia1. Megaw reports that its contents were placed in the Limassol Museum1. In 1960 the Department excavated a tomb at Skasmata. Dikaios dates it to the end of the Cypro-Classical II period; its second chamber had five tunnel-shaped niches, one of them holding the remains of an incinerated human body, and finds included a Plain White VII amphora and an amphora of "Stroke-polished" II (VII) ware2.
