The project
Max Ohnefalsch-Richter explored Leondari Vouno, a flat-topped hill close to the village of Eyenja, in 18871. He concluded that the hill was the acropolis of ancient Lidir or Ledroi and that the lower town lay beneath modern Nicosia. Merrillees and Krpata, writing in 1997, state that the remains uncovered at Eyenja-Leondari Vouno can be dated to the Early and Middle Bronze Ages, not so far to the Cypro-Archaic, Cypro-Classical or Roman periods in which the names Lidir and Ledroi are attested. They describe the evidence for his assertions as slight1. A separate project of the Cyprus Exploration Fund followed at the hill in 1888.
