The project
In 1983 the Department of Antiquities excavated Tomb 4, a large chamber tomb in the Phinikes necropolis, about half a mile north of Evrykhoa1. The chamber measured 8.32 m long and 1.90 m wide, with a vaulted roof, three lateral loculi and a limestone sarcophagus, and the report says it was probably robbed in antiquity1. Use began in Hellenistic I and continued to the beginning of the Roman period, a range the report gives as approximately 325 BC to AD 1501. The excavation recovered 261 objects, chiefly clay unguentaria, lamps and glass, among them a Red Glazed lamp 25.5 cm long and a Red Glazed jug with a tubular side-spout and ribbed body1.
