Ayia Napa-Makronisos: Department excavation of the cemetery
1989–1990 · Ayia Napa-Makronisos
The Department of Antiquities' winter 1989/1990 excavation on the Makronisos peninsula, where 19 rock-cut tombs were used from the Early Hellenistic period, some into the 4th or 5th century AD.
The project
In the winter of 1989/1990 the Department of Antiquities excavated a cemetery on the Makronisos peninsula, about 6 km west of Ayia Napa, at Ayia Napa-Makronisos1. Carstens reports 19 rock-cut tombs facing east or southeast, used on average from the Early Hellenistic period until the 2nd century AD, with at least six still in use in the 4th or 5th century AD1. Fragments of terracotta sarcophagi were found in a number of the tombs, and Carstens says the type may have been produced in northern Galilee or Cilicia1.
