The project
Municipal road works at Athienou in 2008 exposed a rock-cut tomb, MLA 1947, Tomb 127, which Efthymia Alphas, Contract Archaeological Officer of the Department of Antiquities, excavated1. It held 11 artefacts and few skeletal remains, and the annual report dates the assemblage to Cypro-Archaic I, 750 to 600 B.C.1. The pottery comprised a large White Painted amphora, a Plain White amphora, a Bichrome amphoriskos, a White Painted cup, a White Painted jug with trefoil lip, a Plain White jug with ovoid body and two plain clay lamps of open type1. The metal finds were a copper buckle and a copper fibula, described as clothing accessories, and part of an iron knife whose surface residue was possibly leather, according to the report1. The excavation appears in the Department's annual report for 2008, published in 20101.
