The project
A large rock-cut tomb at Karaolovounos, about 1 km northwest of Anayia, was excavated in 1971 and yielded an intact clay sarcophagus and two repoussé gold diadems1. V. Karageorghis describes a rectangular chamber with a stepped dromos, used in at least two periods and holding several burials from each1. The pottery was almost entirely undecorated Plain White VI and VII jugs and large amphorae, one jug with a moulded human head in relief on its shoulder; other finds were bronze and iron strigils, an iron knife and two coins1. The sarcophagus measures 180 x 45 x 55 cm, with a saddle-shaped lid perforated at four points and ten feet1. Karageorghis takes the two coins, one of the end of the Classical period and one of the reign of Ptolemy II, as the dates of the tomb's two periods of use1. The dig was a Department of Antiquities project1; the chronicle names no excavator1.
