Review of M. Gander, Geschichte und Geographie Westkleinasiens in der Hethiterzeit

I. Yakubovich

Kratylos 83-87

A review of *Geschichte und Geographie Westkleinasiens in der Hethiterzeit* (Gander), a study of the history and geography of western Anatolia in the Hittite period.

Yakubovich reviews Gander's volume, a revised and expanded version of a doctoral dissertation defended at the University of Zurich in 2017, and says that it presents evidence for the political fragmentation of western Anatolia. Gander relates the name Lukka to classical Lycia, places classical Lycia within the former Lukka lands and connects the Lukka with areas east of Lycia, including inland regions, while rejecting a historical Northern Lykia in the Troad. He locates Luwiya on the southern and southwestern edge of the Central Anatolian Plateau and takes the Hittite Laws' replacement of its name by Arzawa as no proof that the two were equivalent; the Arzawan elite's personal names he treats as Luwic without requiring them to be Luwian. Gander concurs with Yakubovich's own view on this point. He also considers identifying the Seha River with the Menderes, which would place the Seha River Land south of Mira.
