The State and Foundations as Buyers

The Cyprus Museum has bought antiquities for as long as the Department of Antiquities has existed. It bought from collectors, licensed dealers and finders, at village doors and in London salerooms, and after 1974 the A. G. Leventis Foundation and the Church of Cyprus bought alongside it. The entries in this part of the section list those purchases one by one, as the buyers themselves published them, and explain what the buyers said they were doing.

How to use these entries
The purchases register lists each published purchase with its date, the object, the buyer, the seller or venue, the price where one was printed, the Cyprus Museum inventory number and the reason the buyer gave, with the source for every line. The state as buyer tells the same history as a narrative, period by period.
The register sits beside the record of lawful export in how many Cypriot antiquities left the island lawfully and the prices discussed in the economics of looting.
