Terracotta Woman Statue

Description:

Head of terracotta statue of woman, broken away just below the chin and nap; the face is made with a mould and further modelled with a tool, such as the feathering on the eye-brows; some applied detail, such as the line of pellets around the ears, probably depicting ear-flaps, and long curls on nape of neck; the back is mostly unworked, except for the remains of applied curls just above the break, and hand-made separately; the join between front and back is represented by a slight hollow running behind the moulded curls, masked with a band of paint showing the continuation of the hair; ears (one missing) shown as a row of pellets; the eyes are defined by ridges around the sockets; the painted eye-balls have slight points in the centre; three rows on moulded curls on the forehead, with the rest of the hair painted; made of reddish clay covered with a pale buff slip, with painted details: brown hair, eye -brows and eyes, red lips; small hole on top of head for assemblage and firing.
