Terracotta Votary Figurine

Terracotta Votary Figurine

Description:

Terracotta figurine of a female, probably a votary or priestess; base missing and surface very worn; hollow, mould-made, back plain; the woman stands frontally, with her hands on her breats; the clothing is indistinct because of the worn surface; full, rounded face with a prominent chin; large pointed nose; she wears what appears to be a diadem or headdress (or perhaps a veil) over her hair; made of fairly coarse orange-buff clay, with traces of red paint on the body; a white deposit on the back may be the remains of slip or the results of firing.
