Pottery jug in Bichrome Ware, decorated with a bird in the 'free field' style; wheel-made; ovoid body on a long ring base; nattow neck with a trefoil mouth; single strap handle from shoulder to rim; made of buff clay, fired to a cream-white surface, decorated with dark brown to black and red paint. The field below the trefoil mouth is filled with a large bird in flight facing to the right; the body is drawn in silhouette, except for the wing which is hatched or filled, while the eye shown in profile; a single large wing, drawn in outline but hatched with parallel lines extends behind the animal; the legs extend in front, the left one with three claws, the right with four. Two swastikas in the field behind the bird's neck. A pair of eyes is drawn on the mouth; hook motif below the handle which blends with the solid paint on the handle itself; along the handle is a string of small white panels. The vase is slightly dented in places from firing; irregular patchs may be the result of contact with other vases in the kiln; surface worn in places.
