Phoenician Bichrome Jug

Description:

Large pottery juglet or jug in Phoenician Bichrome ware (or a close Cypriot imitation); wheel-made. Thick-walled globular body on a ring base with a nipple-like projection underneath; tall cylindrical neck with a squared-off everted rim; ridge half-way up the neck, above the junction with the handle; handle from body to base of neck, oval section. Made of buff-orange clay decorated with semi-lustrous black and red paint: two large bull's eyes on each side of the body, each flanked by concentric bands of black and red paint; large hatched dark motif is painted below the neck opposite the handle; horizontal red bands around the neck; oblique red lines on the rim.
