Series·John Thomson, Cyprus 1878
Kyrenia, Bellapais, Paphos and the Troodos
10 photographs · 1878
Site: Kyrenia
Ten of John Thomson's 1878 negatives were taken on the north coast, in the west and in the mountains. On the north coast he photographed the harbour of Kyrenia with its fortifications, the town seen from the hills above it, a man with a packhorse on the road from Nicosia, and the abbey at Bellapais below the mountains, which his caption names in a spelling Wellcome reads as "Palotzea". In the west he photographed rock-cut tombs at what his caption calls "the site of ancient Paphos", the inside of a tomb chamber looking out to its entrance, and the massive masonry wall of a tomb exposed in a trench. The series also holds a view on Mount Troodos, a man with pack mules on a mountain path, and a valley with a village that Wellcome names, with a query, "Kataporizote".

The negatives are held by the Wellcome Collection in London. Each item shows Wellcome's positive from the negative, the contact print made from it in 1981 and the glass plate. On the three from Kyrenia and the Kyrenia road the 1981 print is the mirror image of the positive, and those items say so.
