21/3Possibly this first trial trench on account of a misjudgment of the conditions was placed in an unsuitable spot. To investigate this the work is moved to another part of the field. North-east of the previously mentioned mulberry tree a haroupia stands in the field wall itself. South of this but quite close to it a quantity of mortar pieces and white stones suggest that walls exist below the ground surface. Precisely at this spot the Aphrodite statue was found, according to the finder. Despite the awareness that excavations had been made here by the farmers, a trench is opened at this place c 10 from a point c 10 m south of the haroupia and further to the south c m.
