… 13 - 15 still without firmer results, as here only [page number: 15] the surface layer at the level of the marble floor has been removed. The marble floor is cleared and photographed. (bl. 18; 12,5.)
(Note. Since the long trench discussed here, Section I, runs mainly in a West–East direction (SW–NE) the designations "north trench wall" and similar will be used here for brevity instead of the exact ones. The exact directions can better be studied on the map.) Area 1–8 is drawn in plan, scale 1/50; the marble floor is left for the time being. – In square 1 at c. 1 m depth a completely sterile hard layer is found. In square 13 a fragment of a column was exposed at 0,50 m depth, c 0,30 m diam, projecting from the south trench wall c 0,80 m. The column, which lies horizontally, is on the round surface provided with two cuttings c 12 cm broad and corresponding to each other, and obliquely above one of them another, slightly somewhat smaller. At the end where the diam is measured there is in the centre a recess for the socket of the associated column piece. Beside and obliquely under the column a flat limestone slab was exposed, similar to those in the marble floor.
