Several workers in light head coverings and dark clothing bend over a trench, digging with hoes and spades. A child in a pale dress bends at the front edge of the cut, and a man in a hat and dark coat works beside it. A standing man at the upper right holds a long tool, and beyond the trench a flat plain runs to low hills.
