Terracotta head with veil, area south of the rampart

Complete terracotta head with part of the neck, from the area south of the rampart at Salamis, square K VI/γ3, Classical period; inventory Tc_0847. The face is elongated with Greek features: marked brow ridges, parted lips with full lips, a long strong nose that continues the line of the forehead, and clearly drawn eyelids; the right eye is almond-shaped and the left larger. The nose is damaged at the tip and on its left wing. The chamois fabric retains white slip on the upper left half, and the head is hollow-moulded with the back roughly closed at the top (thick clay burrs). The hair shows as a thin frontal roll, and a veil that leaves little hair visible stands up oddly, probably supported by a rigid crown or stephane, before falling behind the ears; a ribbon or turban may lie between hair and veil. Cheveux en mince bourrelet frontal (dessinés par incision sur les côtés, mais pas au milieu : boudin central ?). Voile ne laissant passer que peu de cheveux, et curieusement dressé, supporté sans doute par une couronne rigide ou stéphané , avant de retomber en arrière des oreilles.
