Terracotta head of the Great Goddess with calathos, Classical
Object card: 1967. Mission archéologique française de Kition-Salamine (MOM, Lyon), Nakala, SAL_2081. "Terracotta head of the Great Goddess with calathos, Classical". CC BY 4.0. Resized.
Fragment of the upper part of a head of the Great Goddess with calathos, from the area south of the rampart, Salamis; the top of the calathos is undecorated. Chamois fabric, hollow-moulded, with a roughly shaped back pierced by a vent hole, so the calathos is open; H. 6.3 cm. The hair is puffed and swept back in very regular locks (seven can be counted). The lower edge of the calathos is indistinct, but there is a gap between it and the hair (?). Decoration at the base: two rows of convex pellets, very closely spaced and irregular, stacked one above the other but slightly staggered, the pellet at the far right of the upper row omitted because of the seam brought forward. Square K VI/δ4; Classical period; inventory Tc_0609; slides C_1978; negatives 02129_01 and 01089_01; plate PL_02; 6 April 1967.
