Trench 2
depth varying from 20 to 30 cms. Stratum 2: Directly below this, and extending at irregular depth to the bedrock, is a layer of red earth with some large stones. Str. 2 a Along the wall ledge of the ancient bedrock throughout, and across the trench in sections M-P, is a layer of fallen stones directly on bedrock. Str. 3 In sections T-P the level of the rock within the ledge was prepared for quarrying long wall-blocks (for the outer walls - from 55 to 70.0 wide & broad. One of these blocks remains unbroken, with the quarry cuttings in various stages of completion around them. In these cuttings, and around in the places where blocks have been removed, is a fill of small Xafifa stones. Bed-rock cuttings: As shown on the plans (p. 136.), at various places within the quarried surface are holes - some sq. and some round, of about 10 cm. depth. These extend beyond the west edge of the trench, and discussion is best reserved for further excavation reports.
