74 Trench 2 Section 3 - H-O to Φ-Φ'

This section represents the west west end of the track.

PLANS: pp 13-14, 36, 39-40, 38 The west E edge of the trench contains a ledge of bedrock remaining at its original level and marking the approximate W end of the stadium. This rock is cut along in a straight line about a meter beyond the west end of the S wall; this line continues (quarried down to the E to a level 30-50 cms. below the original surface of the rock, to a point in O where it juts forth to the west 1,50; in this corner on the cut-down surface the quarrymen's cuttings (c. 7 cm. broad) are still evident. The line of ledge continues north some 4 meters, the bedrock here rising above the surface soil; then it again extends in westward, now irregularly, and continues roughly nes north in an irregular line, cut into by quarry work at all angles and sometimes broken away. The surface here to which the rock is cut away within grows much lower as it approaches the W, though the original surface remains at approximately the same level throughout; there is a rise again of the cut-down surface toward the center of the track.

STRATIFICATION: Stratum 1: The entire quarried section is covered by a black-earth stratum of
