Trench 2 Section 2 - I.X-M to I.W.AA-M^1 (widening) This section, following the trench north of the wall, presents peculiarities worthy of special mention. Plans see same as for section 1 stratun 7. Stratification: The top stratum is here quite regular except for the dip of black earth already mentioned in M' & M wid. This earth thinly covers, in some places bears exposed, the high bedrock on the east edge of the trench. Where this rock is cut it drops down and gains a thickness of c. 30 cm, preserving its original level above and sloping upward slightly as it approaches the wall debris to the south. Below it is a narrow stratum Stratum 2: Below this black soil is a narrow stratum (c. 10 cms) of reddish, sandy soil, without stones except near the wall debris, where it thickens and is some disturbed from falling wall-filling. Stratum 4: At the ends bottom of stratum 2 is preserved, but various places throughout the trench, a crust of trampled earth^W of thesometimes almost like cement. In N, directly below the cut rock ledge, this pavement rests upon χάβαρα fill and is held in place by large stones to the S, which fill the space between the wall-end and the ledge. This filling has fallen in, however, to the W, where it slopes down irregularly to the bedrock. A squared stone in Λ, against the ledge, continues the level of the pavement; the

χάβαρα continues west in a constantly narrowing strip against the ledge throughout Λ; at the edge of West K it is lost amid a pile of fallen stones. South of this strip of χάβαρα the same level is preserved by the champ of stratum 2 to 4, but the pavement here is almost completely gone, and the soil was removed. At K' and Λ' the pavement is again preserved, below stratum 2, and at the edge, where it was broken away to the south a second similar "paving" appears a few centimeters below it. These two slope gradually to the level of the rock in K', the rock itself at various places in K and K' has been filled in to an even level with a similar pavement, here whiter and more cement-like. Stratum 5: This is a thick layer of sandy red soil with few stones, extending below the "pavery" directly to the bedrock, where cut away (in Λ Λ are quarry marks).
