20. Nov22-23, 1938 into separate sacks. This will be most useful work, I believe, and, though slow, will be finished before I leave. Meanwhile, as planned, I have moved to a small table and today, with the aid of the large table, we went through all the pot-sherds. Pieces of tiles and tile-pipes have been set aside in piles according to sections, and will so be stored in sacks. All pieces of kanysia are also separated and I shall begin the catalogue of them tonight. Also a good many pieces of terracottas, which were before not recognized, were set out in their appropriate places. The remaining mass of pottery proper was all labelled in washable ink, each piece by section, and placed in groups according to fabric, etc. We found very few joins, and those fresh breaks with both pieces from the same section. This would imply, I think, that whole pottery, excepting the little votive cups, was not thrown into the pit, and the sherds are probably there accidentally. They will be numbered tomorrow according to fabric groups, and stored, as they will eventually be of great chronological importance. Number of joins: 18 Nov. 23. This morning was taken up, for me, with cataloguing, returning pieces to their places, etc., and then in going

Nov. 23, 193821. through the basket of small pieces finds which Euthymios had sorted out for me yesterday. His work was not so good, but still saved me a great deal of time, and I gave him a lesson in sorting and set him to work on another basket. With the other routine work I can hardly do more of these than a basket a day. Antonis and Nicolas looked for sherd-joins all day. In the afternoon I placed all the tile & pipe sherds into sacks with their appropriate section labels and they are now stored in a large basket. The rest of the afternoon I spent in work on the "soapy-clay" terracottas - our most difficult problem. In the morning Christos brought them all out and placed them on the big table by sections. I have now labelled (with signs) all but the smallest pieces with the section number and have started in upon the sorting of them. The edges are so bad that I fear any great results from the work, but something will come out of it, with great patience. Christos did back mending most of the day. The small pieces are now separated in the basket thus: a. Loose in basket - plain legs of horses b. In labelled sack - unusual legs, etc. c. " " " - human arms, legs, etc. d. " " " - attributes (shields, etc.)
