[66] by proj. block in middle of N. side. The fact that E. wall of F. seems diff. may be reconstruction. Where was entrance to bath in 1st Period? (at West?) More likely at North - where a street.

July 6P.M. Continuing SE section, Walls: -135- Run EW. [R.S. orient] -136- Only 135 & 143 are ||. -140- -143-

Wall -136- at E. end (S. face) is good, of ashlar & chip and a good deal of gray mortar. It may be earlier than -140- and -129. For joint with latter is imperfect, but it does seem to go over broad footing on which -129- stands. for it makes a better L with it. It never played any part in the late villa.

Wall -135- lower part liberally 'parged'. Note a struck horizontal joint. Visible only at W. E. End shows merely top some of which may be modern. When built was not set very deep. (Ca. .75 below grade & rests on earth fill as does E. wall of E mosaic corridor at this point.!

It would seem queer but the orientation of wall -135- though the same as that of -143- does not seem really motivated by it. The S wall of the rooms to S. of

Big Room was not.

-141-, -142-. The first is ARCT. with only 2 pcs tile It runs over -143- and when built, top of 143 may have from here west for a bit may have been removed. Suggest drop of level from Rm 49 into Rm 56 at this time. which goes with blocking of. door in -140-. Wall -137- slightly off line is inferior & divides rooms 53, (54-55) in Villa late period Fdn- wall 142 = broad rubble & mud contemp with Fdn -138-. The upper part of 138- seems to have been cut, at S. end, about .50 from face of -140-. Fill has much b. p. cement also found under part of -137-. N.B. -137- begins at S. with a pier that belongs with -140- 162
