Room (69) Door blocked very late. perhaps outer range of S. Rooms ruined?

Room (70). W. wall [-194] contains no tile but bonds at top w. -165-. E. wal -195- same as -186,- and has same broad fdn., apparently laid material going down to rock. So has -191- though its upper part looks tile, and it is more rubble & mud.

Looking S. from S. mosaic corridor, the upper part of -165- seems uniform save for filling of door in 69. NOTE, a re-used Doric cap to E. of jamb of doorway. Tall block, at center N. side (70) probably W. jamb of opening - Sill missing but two flat blocks below for fdn. W. of door ca. 1.10 as in room 69. Rm (71). Door where shown on plan. The drain running thru it & cutting the mosaic bedding, certifies a door here as well

NB. Show this drain on plan

Wall -155- Large, random ashlar, laid in and joints filled with hard, white lime mortar. Appears built against -165- which, however, has been liberally pointed near angle with same mortar, but strictly below mosaic level. This wall -155- is definitely pre-mosaic - and probably post -165-

Right page

S.W. angle torn out, and return along S. side represented only by a footing trench. Corner thickened for strength (?) Parged on inside. No footing trench visible (CHECK). Hence fill of room should post date it.

-151- is 0.57 th. or possibly more. Also built against -165-a- (or 162-) Could there have been a door with E jamb 0.76 to W. of inner corner of room? Or is the cement edge merely where a stone was removed. It looks too sharp for that. Sill level would have been ca .65 below mosaic There is no sign of a corresponding floor in the fill of the room. -151- continues down hill & around curve, where fdns are of rubble & concrete filled in to a trench. -153- and -133- probably only buttresses or piers on inside -150- contemp., but thin, not over 0.52. th. & may be a small terrace (narrow terrace). The line -149-,-148-,-147- may be a cross-wall, but almost fully plundered. -129- is of same constr. as 151-. It is built against angle of -143- -129- North wall are all part of same constr. & very like wall -165- save for use of mortar in chinking.

-145- Well laid rubble & mud, is earlier than -143- or at best contemp.
