Villa. July 5. (Directions acc. to R.S.) (S. = Fayles' W.) South corridor & S. Mosaic. [circled: 64], [circled: 65] Wall 165, 165 a, beginning at N. 165. North end. - Orthostate fronts back with bonding stones, 2 1/2 courses above gutter, lower course .46 h., upper .58. Wall -175- large & med squared blocks chinked by chips, and small amt. of tile. Evidently built against gutter. Gutter at base of Wall-175-(-201-) large squared blocks resting on fdtn of same. with some chinking. -176- and its north return, which underlies -175- but not on same orientation antedates gutter -201- for it runs under it to the E. Diagonal drain -202- cut by -175- -177- built against -165-, could be contemp. but traces of mortar on E. side may show it to be later. -178- rubble & chip. does not extend to wall 165- & could be disregarded. DRAW ELEV of -165- To show constr.? Fdns. -165- at W. go down over 2. m to hardpan(?) -179.- small rubble & tile, lower part widens to N. but probably all one. This looks later than -182- which is good small rubble & chip. esp in N. part. and pres. top level with T shelf of -179- -181- = pres 179-, cut by -182-. which appears to have gone on against -164-

N.B. dig out junction of 182- & 165- -183- contemp w. -182- -184- late. ftg at high level. probably assoc. w. flagging in Rm [circled: 68], N. half. Semi ashlar - rubble, tile and marble frags. -185- Very low level - disregard.

Lower part, -186 a- broad rubble fdtn. laid in trench cut in fill of earth which lay aganist -165- bottom part This fdtn is level with + of sketch above Working chip layers go with constr. of upper part of -165- -186- & 165- in Room [circled: 69] brick and rough squared ashlar occasional sea pebble. Good sound work at base more shoddily toward top.
