20:15d

June 29, 1954 Lay out a trench 2 × 4 m. parallel with 20:15 b and separated from it by a baulk 35 cm. wide. Call this 20:15 d. Throughout most of trench reach bedrock almost immediately below top soil (ca. 40 cm. depth). In east find a deep cutting in the bed-rock which is no doubt a continuation of the cutting in 20:15 b. A rectangular dromos leading into the main cutting assures that the whole cutting, in which the wall of 20:15 b stands, was once a tomb. In the third stratum from the top (lighter red brown earth; s. p. 122 which shows the stratification of the baulk) and downwards is found a filling of loose stones and heavy pithos sherds, probably put in in ancient times to close up the space between the wall (of 20:15 b) and the irregular bpáxos cutting to the west of it.

In view of the shallowness of most of 20:15 d, extend the trench northwards to join 20:15 c. Extension will be referred to as 20:15 d north, original trench as 20:15 d south.

June 30, 1954 Remove baulk and all filling in 20:15 d (s) leaving wall standing. Clear 20:15 (d) n. It consists entirely of bed rock, with several shallow cuttings (2 circular, 2 rectangular), about 30-40 cm. below surface
