20:15 a (from p. 121)

28 June 1954 At -1.69 to -1.80 find a cutting in the bedroder with several stones which may be the foundation trench of a wall. This is 2,3 m. from north end of trench. At 1.69 there is a definite change of soil from red gritty to softer gray green. Clearing these stones I give up the idea that they belong to a wall. In the part of 20:15 excavated by Daniel adjacent to 20:15 a carry his level down to ours and find what is undoubtedly the remains of a small furnace, a more or less circular area with an unmistakeable burnt layer, approximately 1,20 m. in diameter at -2.00 m.

Sink a trial trench below level of furnace. In south part of trial trench find bed rock, in north a few scattered stones at -2.22. This is red gritty earth below the gray green, which in any case does not emerge very clearly as a stratum in the south scarp. Cf. Daniel's remarks about levels on p. 15.

29 June 1954 Dig trial trench to -2.35 finding small scattered stones in greenish gray earth.
