Lay out a further extension of Tr. 20:15 in an area 2 x 4 m. at the SW corner. Call this 20:15 C.

Clear to bed-rock throughout which in the west is very near to surface (only 5 cm) and which in the east is as much as 75 cm below surface. Much of the area seems to be a an "open place" to which access is gained by the stairs found by Daniel; but there are two large cuttings filled with stones, presumably in order to level them.

June 29, 1954

The first cutting, which will be called Pit #1 is a deep modern intrusion which seemingly goes into a tomb chamber. Sherds and a few bones, probably human, are found in the fill, which is thus probably the original fill shovelled back by the diggers of the intrusion. The second cutting, which will be called Intrusion # 2, has a huge irregular shape. It was probably filled in ancient times to level the area. In all probability it will not be worth cleaning the whole cutting. Sherds and a few bones are found.
