Letter from Virginia Grace about sounding in circuit wall, and other matters. Accompanying letter, p.124

approaches the outcropping of rock has a sort of path down its middle (N - S) .20 to .35 wide (widening toward the south). We haven't gone deep into it, just to clear the stones on either side. At .85 below top of this wall, bedrock in the sounding. The east end of our hole is narrowed at the bottom by some stones which cut across the angle between the circuit wall (which goes to bedrock) and the earth we left under the socket thing; also by a hard surface which rises with a marked batter from bedrock and disappears into the N wall of our sounding. This hard surface goes right to the circuit wall. In our sounding .55 of its E - W extent are visible. Its height (measured on the slope - really a hypotenuse) is ca. .30, its batter (measured with plumb bob) is .18. I am sorry to be so complicated about this, but the smallness of the hole is responsible. So far as the sherds have been examined, it looks as though your wall could be "Mycenaean", since the metavatic sherd was certainly high (I think higher than the actual top of the wall). Do let us know some time if you ever got the pictures and several letters I sent you last spring. George says to tell you the old cook has been bounced and Savvy has become a marvelous successor under the Young's tutelage. I won't write any more because it is the middle of the night, and anyway it will run to money airmail. I am anxious to catch this week's plane. Best luck with all the phasarias for getting a degree; I am so glad to think you have someone to take care of you at this critical time. Yours, Virginia Mr. Hill remained in Grece. People seem to have been busy there helping Semne put away the various museums (including the Kerameikos, with practically no benefit of Germans, who all had very important business elsewhere).
