[122] | Letter from Virginia Grace about sounding in circuit wall, and another letter. Accompanying
or probably within a week or so this will have been finished and developed, and we hope to get permission to send you both prints and negatives, but fear they will be too heavy for airmail. Included will be pictures of our excavations behind the circuit wall and of representative sherds therefrom, also of the post mark on the stone base in Room 25B because I felt a slight uncertainty as to its identification. Sounding behind early circuit wall. There is no place on view where the earlier stage of that wall rounds an outcropping of rock. At the end of Topha's lot the later wall rounds that outcropping, the earlier stops at it. We dug behind the earlier wall near the rock, first about a meter north of the rock, then striking the bottom of a large pot left there by you, we left it also and moved further north. There, ca. 1.60 to 2.80 north of the rock, found lots of large stones about .20 below top of wall. The area cut down by you behind the wall was about .65 wide and all full of stones. We couldn't tell if we had the new side of the wall yet at all, so we opened ca. .50 further to the west in the same north-south section, in the high ground you had left undug. Here we found more large stones, right near the surface, tops ca. .45 above top of wall. We abandoned all these stones, and went further south, right to the angle between rock and earlier wall, taking down first .50 (E-W) of the higher ground west of what had been cut before. In red earth high, some sherds, mostly "Mycenean" but one rim pronounced definitely metavatic. (Everything about the sherds comes from Christo, and he will send you his own report after they are washed.) Some stones in this fill and some fragments of mud brick. Distinguished from the red earth, a harder mud formation right in the angle of rock and wall, which seems to have a socket (see drawing). The red earth ended on an uneven surface of whitish earth at .15 below the top of the wall. In this we find the face of another wall about 1.00 now of the west face of the earlier circuit wall. The whitish earth (mixed with some fair) ends about .65 below top of (circuit) wall (equals Christo's 1.50 below vrachos as written on label). Below, dark earth, harder than the whitish. Still sherds, including a large piece of rim of dana. The wall to the west rested on the dark earth; its whole ht ca. is .50; it was plastered with mud. The socket thing in the angle has no floor, going and inside one simply comes to the whitish layer as outside, so depth of the artificial bath is about .20 - .25; its top level is that of the circuit wall. The top of this as it
