TRENCH 16
20.3.39Extend trench 16 to the East, as shown on p. 20. Remove the top-soil and clear to a reddish level at @ 9.56 b: 9.69, c: 9.79, d: 9.82, e: 9.80. At this level we detect and clear numerous plunderer's pits. The tops of walls appear at this level, and a provisional division into rooms 5, 10-13, is made. Some may have to be fused later. This level seems to be the top of the decomposed brick of the walls.
21-3.39 Digging below the 1st red level (above) we find a second, redder level, at 9.71 at a, 9.84 at b, 9.94 at c, 9.97 at d, 9.95 at e. The top of what seems to be a broken pithos in situ appears in 16:13
23.3.39The surface intrusion in 16:11 was not entirely cleared above, so we clear it now. As a result the sherds to 9.84 are mixed. In 16:10 we discover what may be a pit, just below the 9.71 level. The earth is white and gravelly. There is a thin layer of red over it. It is probably a surface intrusion.
