1.5.39 The earth below 7.71 Dig below 7.71 in 6b. It lies over a Baugrab for wall II. In the N. part west of the room it stops at at a firm gritty red layer. In the S-E there is red earth with many small stones, and there is a change to softer earth around wall I. Photo Bam 39:856 with footing trenches cleared The N+S parts of the room had the same earth below 7.71, but it changes below this. In the N. part (a) [the 1st meter S. of wall II], firm brown earth with pale green grits is found at 7.92. South of this line (b), looser red earth with grits and small stones is found at 7.80.
The 7.92 level in 6b(a) is cut by the Baugrabs for walls I (from above) and III; the 7.80 in 6b(b) by that of walls I + VI.
3.5.39 The Baugrab of wall II (p. 154:b) goes in the east to a pebble pavement. In the west it goes to clayey white earth which apparently lies over the pavement.
Dig below 7.92 in 21:6b(a). There is a distinct layer of white grits, after which is brown earth, going down onto firm light brown earth, (to p. 157)
