31-3-39Tomb 16

Tomb 16 lies immediately east of tomb 12. 0.65 below the surface we begin to find many pieces of mud brick. Bones and pottery, mostly L.C. III are found scattered through it, hardly in-situ.

The presence here, as also in tombs 2 and 9, of large quantities of mud-brick indicates that these tombs, sunk in soft sandstone, had a brick superstructure, perhaps covered with a mound of earth.

1-4-39 1.00 below the surface find bones and various ancient objects lying scattered among frags. of brick. Photos Bem ^39\ 38-41 all 1.00

3-4-39 Remove objects from and above floor. # 1, 8-15, 19-22 were over the 1.00 floor; 2-7, 16-18 on it. In the S-W colner objects reached 0.65 below the surface.

4-4-39 A lower level, at which all sherds and bones stop, is found at 1.20. (to p. 71)
