[pencil: 411] TRENCH 11 (from p. 101) [115]

24-5-38 pit, through the same fill. At 6.50 we find a very large stone, 1.50 x 0.50 x 0.25 [pencil: 7], with five several holes worn by ropes. This is certainly the stone which once stood at the top of the well, and over which the water-jars were hoisted.

26-5-38 At 7.00 large pieces of chavara begin to appear in the fill.

30-5-38 The same fill continues down. We have now passed the bottom of the masonry, and the shaft is cut in very solid bed-rock. At 8.00 we discover another, enormous stone. It is 1.85 x x

10-6-38 At 11.00 from surface patches of ashy earth and burnt stones appear.

NB Christo describes bottom of well as a kind of tank hewn out of konnos - obviously within the water table - about a metre deep. JLB, 1954.
