Clean at the east end of 2:10, removing the small stones left in the line of the E wall of 2:8. Relatively clean red-brown earth goes from the cutting in green rock, and goes down into a large pit, with large stones along its N + E sides, and still larger ones about 0.40=0.60 down. Photo 197 of pit at 0.40 = 0.60, showing stones. Remove the stones and go on down, through similar earth.

1-4-38 Reach bed-rock 1.30 down. The lower part of the pit is lined with a thick layer of packed earth, and many unbaked bricks are found, which must have carried the lining up to the large stones. There is no indication that the pit was used for water or rubbish. The lining indicates that it contained a very large pithos. Photo 199-200 of pit finished. Start to clear between the pit and the plaster floor, on the S., finding bed-rock save in the line of the S. wall, where we find light grey mud. Finish 2-4-38
