TRENCH 2

8-4-37 from p. 57

Unit 8: The layer of ash stops at 10.00 9.92-10.17 10.08. In the west we find burnt tumble, (at 10.02) as in units 3, 12, 14, + 15, with a great deal of burnt brick. In the S-E central part is red-brown earth without burnt (at 10.17) matter, and at the S-E and E is the layer with clay and much crushed limestone which we found in units 10 and 13 to be Iron Age disturbance. This layer seems to continue under the unburnt red in the middle room, so this too is doubtless disturbed. Only the burnt tumble in the west is not suspect.

Open another section to the east of unit 8. Here too we find the whitish disturbed layer at 10.17

Isolate 4 more recent intrusions in the whitish disturbed earth. In the east find undisturbed earth at 10.40
