TRENCH 4

11.3.37 Spend the day extending the trench to the N-E, digging out surface intrusions, and cleaning walls, particularly in unit 1. The area of the trench is fairly littered with surface intrusions, obviously representing an intensive and ill-advised search for tombs, a good many years ago. In many cases the pits are dug well into bed rock. (actually 9.19-9.44)

12.3.37 Finish clearing unit 3 to the 9.21 level. The floor is of brown earth with a well trod sandy surface, fairly littered with fragments of a pithos and ordinary pottery.

Photos Bam. 10-11 of 9.21 floor with finds in situ.

Remove the finds from the 9.21 floor (see p. 134), and cut down through fairly clean brown earth to a floor of bluish composition at 9.30-9.44. This floor is quite uneven. It slopes up to the bed rock in the west.
