TRENCH 4

8-3-37 / contd.stone pithos. This too is an intrusion from the present surface, and destroyed the wall between tr units 1 & 6. Stops at 9.43

9-3-37Clear in units 2, 3, + 4. In unit 2 the stones of the tumble stop at a floor at 9.10 = 9.4238, composed of brown sandy earth. This is just over a finer floor of a composition χαβάρα, which slopes up to a few traces of a walls. Clear the 9.10 = 9.38 floor. It runs to the wall j-k (page 126) and to the north wall of unit 2. It is destroyed by a modern intrusion in the S-E corner and is lost in the south.

Remove the 9.10 = 9.38 floor and clear the χαβάρα floor beneath it (9.22 = 9.40). This floor too is miss destroyed by the intrusion. It ends on the South in a fairly straight line, but no trace of a wall is preserved. Of the east wall a trace is preserved in the N-E corner, the χαβάρα sloping up to it. The north wall is fairly well preserved: only at the upper end the stones are gone, but the corner is indicated by the end of the floor and the cutting for the wall in the bed-rock above. On the west the χαβάρα floor can be traced cm. under wall j-k (p. 126). Thus wall j-k goes with the 9.10 = 9.38
